Over the years, this has led to growing concerns, notably about the micro-targeting of children and other exploitative practices prevalent in the surveillance economy. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office has taken a significant step towards addressing these concerns by introducing the Age-Appropriate Design Code, commonly known as “The Children’s Code”.
This code is a critical evolution in data protection laws and bears considerable implications for technology companies, including those developing educational websites, apps, social media platforms, online games, and other online platforms and services likely to be accessed by under-18s.

- Data minimization suggests that only the minimum amount of personal data should be collected and processed.
Geolocation, which should be turned off by default in apps and online services likely to be accessed by children,
* Profiling, which states that profiling should be off by default to protect children from manipulative content and branding.
Beyond explicit children’s services, this code applies to all online services that may be accessed by anyone under the age of 18, echoing the principles of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This illustrates the intent to cover a broad spectrum of services, including, but not limited to, search engines, social media platforms and apps, connected toys and devices like Hello Barbie, streaming services, and online games.
